The city of Uyuni is the gateway to the spectacular Salares, lagoons and volcanoes of the Altiplano. The main attraction is the Salar de Uyuni, the largest in the world.
The Salar de Uyuni is considered the world’s largest. It has an area of 12,000 square kilometers. Every year thousands of tourists come to Uyuni to discover the great salt desert.
Getting to Uyuni
Uyuni is in the Department of Potosi in the Bolivian altiplano at 3675 meters.
Getting to Uyuni by bus: Different transport companies Uyuni communicate with other cities in Bolivia. Travel times are: La Paz 12 hours. Potosi 7 hours. Sucre 11 hours. Oruro 9 hours. Villazon 10 hours.
Getting to Uyuni by train: the Expreso del Sur and Wara Wara make the journey to Oruro to Villazón north and south.
From Chile: some travel agencies made the transfer from Uyuni to San Pedro de Atacama.
Visit to Uyuni
The small town of Uyuni has many hostels and hotels, travel agencies and restaurants. It also has a market in full city and a pedestrian street where many shops are located. Long Uyuni was an important railway and mining center. Today it is a quiet place that receives hundreds of tourists every week.
In the city you can visit the Archaeological and Anthropological Museum of the Southern Andes. Hours: Tuesday to Friday from 8.30 to 12.00 and from 14.00 to 18.00 pm. Saturdays and Sundays from 9.00 am to 13.00 pm.
